The people of Kodiak, Alaska are extremely fortunate to share the island with a large population of Kodiak Brown Bears (Ursus Arctos Middendorffi). An understanding of the issues surrounding the complex relationship between bears and man is critical to ensure that continuing co-habitation is healthy and sustaining for all. In addition to local links on this page, there are links to numerous resources for obtaining more information about this great creature.

What you must know about bears

Bears and humans do not naturally co-exist. Although at times bears may seem as if they are ignoring the presence of humans, they are in fact very aware. Bear encounters can pose a danger to both humans and bears. Please consult with professionals and take the proper precautions before venturing into bear country.
